Jacobsen Board 10 Frame

Here in the Willamette Valley and along the Oregon Coast, our colonies are more at risk from very moist winters rather than dry cold. This means beekeepers have two options to help their hives pull through wet winters; adding water wicking materials and maximizing ventilation.

Water wicking materials can certainly help, but must be maintained and replaced throughout the winter. Adding ventilation (the Jakobsen Board) and tilting your hive so the entrance is angled slightly lower than the back of the hive is a great way to help get excess moisture OUT of your hive! 

The Jakobsen Board replaces the Standard Inner Cover or the Vivaldi Inner Cover. The Jacobsen Board is the same depth as the Vivaldi Cover, but has a screened bottom rather than a solid bottom for maximum ventilation!
