Rose Checkermallow, Sidalcea malviflora ssp. virgata, prefers full sun in moist to moderately dry slopes, meadows, or prairie.
This perennial has bright pink flowers late spring and early summer are good for bees and crucial habitat for butterflies, including Fender’s Blue, Painted Lady and Skippers.
Direct Sow: Mix contents of seed packet with 3 times as much vermiculite. Spread and rake in 1/2" deep in bare disturbed ground or scarified meadow late fall to winter. Covers 100 square feet.
In Containers: Preferred. Plant 2-3 seeds per cell or pot for spring or fall transplanting. Keep moist at moderate temperatures, for planting out 12" apart (4 to 6 months to transplant)
NOTE: May obtain better and more uniform germination by soaking for 6 hours in 180 degree water prior to planting.
