Madia Elegans Tarweed

Habitat: This highly productive native annual has been used for centuries by the indigenous peoples within the Willamette Valley and beyond! Its seeds are used to make flour! Historically, tarweed fields would be burned to further increase seed production. Great plant for feeding native birds! These plants prefer dry, open, full sun sites. They establish well in sandy, rocky, and coarse soils! Slopes or hard-to-water areas would be a perfect site for them! Their flowers are a beautiful mix of yellow and red, often closing during daytime to conserve water and opening in the evening!

Direct Sow: Mix contents of seed package with 3 times as much volume of vermiculite or fine coir. Spread on bare disturbed ground in fall or spring. No cold stratification required. Cover up to 100 sq. ft. 

In containers: Plant 2-3 seeds per cell or pot and keep cool and moist, for planting out 8-10” apart in early spring.
